I am looking for video's of Joseph Campbell to share online but as of yet have been unable to find even one. If anyone does know where there are any online please contact me and let me know so i can post them up here. citing you as the resource of course. I was first exposed to Joseph Campbell on TV during the late night when i was unable to sleep while watching public TV. Once i would turn him on it was impossible to get any sleep, the guy was just an incredible speaker and his way of looking back into history was quite refreshing.
This is relevant to to much of the video's i have been slapping up here because he looked back without reservation of what society teaches us to believe is true of today. His story "Hero of a thousand faces" was just brilliant in how he looked back at all of histories greatest myths and various religious leaders, What he
discovered in his study of world myths is that THEY ARE ALL
BASICALLY THE SAME STORY -- retold endlessly in infinite variation.
Absolutely brilliant work. I know there has to be some videos of him out there somewhere and i am looking for them. But till i find them if you like or love to read, do yourself a favor and pickup this book. You will not regret reading this, in fact you might find it has you questioning a lot of the myths you have heard and also make you question If some of what you have been told to be fact is in fact nothing more than another myth!
Campbell was a student of the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, and the
ideas in THE HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES are often described as
Jungian.
The book is based on Jung's idea of the "Archetypes" constantly
repeating characters who occur in the dreams of all people and the
myths of all cultures.
Jung believed that these archetypes are reflections of the human
mind -- that our minds divide themselves into these characters to
play out the drama of our lives.
The repeating characters of the hero myth, such as the young hero,
the wise old man, the shape-shifting woman, and the shadowy nemesis,
are identical with the archetypes of the human mind, as shown in
dreams. That's why myths, and stories constructed on the
mythological model, are always psychologically true.
Work begins when you don't like what you're doing. Tension, a lack of honesty, and a sense of unreality come from following the wrong force in your life. As an adult, you must rediscover the moving power of your life!
